Jeffrey Alan Samardzija is a starting candidate for the Chicago Cubs. Samardzija played baseball and football at Notre Dame, and easily could have been in the NFL if he had chosen to go down the football path. Samardzija was a rookie in 2008. Kerry Wood got put on the disabled list, and Samardzija got called up. When Kerry Wood returned, Scott Eyre was designated for assignment and sent to the Phillies. Samardzija went 1-0 with a 2.28 ERA in 26 games.
